Survivor Guilt Empty Survivor Guilt

Post by ohtochooseaname Fri Dec 21, 2012 2:11 pm

I seriously can't imagine suffering from this. It's seriously hard for me to feel guilty about something I did more than a week ago...pretty much no matter what it is. I greatly dislike causing harm to other people, but if I do, especially if it is an accident, I really don't feel bad about it later (though I do during). I do feel some guilt if I intended to hurt the other person, but it's not debilitating, and I can't imagine feeling guilty for something I had no control over. Sometimes, I think my lack of feeling guilt makes me potentially very sociopathic...except harming other people has zero appeal to me unless I am angry, and I really only get angry when someone intentionally harms me. If there's any sort of plausible deniability in intent, it's usually easy for me to let it go.

So anyway...are any of you this way? Is it an ISTP thing?

I think it's related to any type who doesn't feel emotions strongly. I'm the same way. My friends still feel bad about things they did ages ago. I just let it go. No use crying over spilt milk and so forth.

It seems like STP together would contribute most to it...S means focused on what is and is observable, T means not feeling strongly/uncontrollably, and P means living in the moment. All three of which mean less survivor guilt depending on how strongly the person is each.

I usually feel bad if and when I hurt somebody.
So it isn't an exclusive ISTP thing.

I don't mull over it obsessively. But I still feel guilt.

Right....buuuut....what about if you survive something (such as layoffs) while people you are close to didn't. Do you feel guilty then?

What is there to feel guilty about? It's not like you did anything wrong in that case. There is nothing in life worth feeling guilty about, merely opportunities to learn.

Assuming the person isn't a complete fuck-up and actually does his or her job--yeah.
Although I'm not going to be over-the-top about it and I'll probably keep it to myself.

Given your scenario.
